Tips On Passing Your Driving Test In Singapore!

After dedicating long hours to your driving lessons, students must score no more than 20 demerit points during their Practical Driving Test (PDT) to pass and obtain their driver’s license. The PDT consists of two components - First, the examiner will assess your skills on a driving circuit. Secondly, you will be allowed onto the roads to test your ability to interact safely with other road users, which tests you on how well you can comply with traffic rules and regulations.

Most candidates who are taking the test for the first time will definitely tend to feel anxious as it is a nerve-wracking experience that requires preparation and concentration. To help you pass your driving test smoothly, here are some tips for you to master one of the most important tests of your life!

1. Know The Theory Of The Road

No matter how confident you are with the Highway Code, it is always good to read through the official handbook again to refresh your memory on the code of conduct. Students must demonstrate a clear understanding of the general traffic rules and requirements of safe driving during their tests.

2. Practice On Possible Test Routes

Your driving instructor would have taken you on various possible test routes to help you get familiar with the area beforehand. Don’t hesitate to request for your driving instructor to go through the different aspects of the test, and always be receptive to feedback given because it helps you improve your driving skills. Don't stop practicing until you are completely familiar with the routes.

3. Check Blind Spots Regularly

Before driving off, ensure that the car’s mirrors are set up correctly. The centre mirror should have the whole of the rear window in view and the side mirrors should have the horizon in the middle of the mirror with a good view to either side of the car.

In addition, being mindful of blind spot driving is an important part of being a defensive driver. Remember to check the mirror every 6 seconds, especially when you are reversing or make any turns. Practising this habit will help prevent yourself and other road users from an accidents that could be easily avoided.

4. Don’t Tailgate

Stay safe by making sure that you can clearly see the back tires and bumper of car in front of you. Tailgating is unnecessary and dangerous, as any sudden stopping by the car in front can lead to a collision. Maintain a distance of at least 2 to 3 car lengths with the vehicle in front of you.

5. Signal To Indicate Your Intention To Switching Lanes

When switching lanes, it is necessary to signal your intention to other drivers beforehand so that they know which direction you are heading towards. Always make sure that it is safe to proceed before doing so. When unsure, always slow down and stay in your lane as you wait for traffic to pass. Do not cut someone off or switch lanes abruptly without checking the next lane.

6. Pay Attention to Your Speed

Be conscious of the speed limits at different areas as exceeding the maximum speed limit will result in an immediate failure. On the other hand, driving too slowly will also lead to 2 demerit points on your test. Drive within the speed limits to minimize the amount of time it takes for you to react to changes on the road or the flow of traffic, and it will also make it easier for you to stop your vehicle if you have to.

Though it is difficult for you to predict the exact route of the driving test, weather conditions, or the accidents and difficulties that you might encounter on the day itself, you can ensure that you are ready and prepared for the test by going through the knowledge that your instructor has taught you and always practice safe driving!
